The Star Trek Sequel Won’t Be Called Star Trek 2

There aren’t a lot of solid details right now on J.J. Abrams’ followup to his 2009 reboot of the Star Trek franchise, but Access Hollywood is reporting one minor bit of information: the sequel won’t be called Star Trek 2.

At this point, speculation on what the title might be is just that, though the franchise’s cinematic history originally abandoned numerical titles with the seventh film, Star Trek: Generations (the same time the reins were passed over to the “Next Generation” crew). Instead of numbers, subsequent films bore the subtitles First Contact, Insurrection and Nemesis.

The article also suggests that the current plan is to put the film before cameras in January with a release date still to be determined.

Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, Simon Pegg, John Cho and Anton Yelchin are expected to all reprise their roles as members of the Enterprise crew with Abrams back in the director’s chair and a script again from Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman.
