Elton John Plans Rocketman

Elton John will become the focus of the fantasy musical biopic Rocketman, Deadline reports.

The film, said to combine the true story of John’s life with fantastical elements from his songs, will be written by Lee Hall (Billy Elliot, War Horse) and executive produced by John himself.

The storyline will begin with the artist’s life at age 11, continuing through adulthood with his songs providing musical backing.

The use of magical realism in biopics has been employed quite a bit in recent years, including in the Allen Ginsberg film Howl and the Bob Dylan-focused I’m Not There.

On the big screen, John has already had a successful year. He executive produced Gnomeo and Juliet, which grossed $190 million worldwide while The Lion King, which he wrote music for in 1994, is currently number one at the box office, following a 3D re-release.

There is no director currently attached to Rocketman, but one is expected to be named in the very near future.
