Writer Hired for the Dirty Dancing Remake

Deadline reports that Lionsgate has hired Maria Maggenti to write the Dirty Dancing remake to be directed by Kenny Ortega (“High School Musical,” Michael Jackson’s This Is It).

The site says that Maggenti landed the job after writing Monte Carlo for Fox. She also wrote an adaptation of Before I Fall and is finishing up My Name Is Memory, also for Fox 2000 and New Regency.

Ortega was the original film’s choreographer. The 1987 movie, starring Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey, earned $213.9 million worldwide.
