Universal Plans The ID Theft

Jason Bateman and Melissa McCarthy will team for a comedy entitled The ID Theft, Deadline reports.

Bateman, who is also producing, will star as the victim of an identity theft by McCarthy’s character. The article notes that the script was originally going to feature a male character on the criminal end of things, but that the script has been rewritten specifically for McCarthy. Steve Conrad (The Weather Man, The Pursuit of Happyness) wrote the first draft with subsequent rewrites by Craig Mazin (The Hangover, Part II).

McCarthy, who stars in the television series “Mike & Molly” made a popular big screen appearance in Universal’s Bridesmaids. Bateman, meanwhile, headlined two Universal comedies this year, including Paul and The Change-Up.

Shooting on The ID Theft (not to be confused with the seemingly defunct Tracy Morgan comedy ID Theft, originally announced early last year) is planned for April 2012 to take advantage of the “Mike & Molly” hiatus.
