Mark Romanek Eyes Disney’s Cinderella

Mark Romanek has been approached about directing Walt Disney Pictures’ Cinderella, Deadline reports.

First announced last year, the live-action project arrives from screenwriter Aline Brosh McKenna (27 Dresses, The Devil Wears Prada) and will feature a brand-new take on the classic fairytale.

Though most people are familiar with the story through the 1950 animated Disney version, the origins of the tale go back as far as the 1st century BC.

Cinderella is not the only live-action reimagining of a classic Disney cartoon in the works at the studio. They’re also planning The Order of the Seven, a fantasy adventure take on “Snow White,” moving the action to 19th century Hong Kong.

Romanek, who began his career as a music video director, was responsible for helming One Hour Photo and, more recently Never Let Me Go. He also directed the pilot episode of “Locke & Key,” which ended up not getting picked up for series.
