Anne Hathaway and Rebel Wilson are Nasty Women

Anne Hathaway and Rebel Wilson are Nasty Women in the big screen update of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels

MGM‘s upcoming gender-swapped remake of Frank Oz’s Dirty Rotten Scoundrels appears to have found a pair of stars. Deadline reports that Academy Award winner Anne Hathaway is in talks to join Pitch Perfect franchise star Rebel Wilson in the project, titled Nasty Women. They’ll play variations on the roles originally played by Michael Caine and Steve Martin in the 1988 original.

Scripted by Jac Schaeffer, Nasty Women is based on the Dirty Rotten Scoundrels script written by Dale Launer, Stanley Shapiro, and Paul Henning. Dirty Rotten Scoundrel was, in turn, based on Stanley Shapiro and Paul Henning’s 1964 script, Bedtime Story. Directed by Ralph Levy, Bedtime Story features Marlon Brando and David Niven in the respective Wilson/Martin and Hathaway/Caine roles.

Dirty Rotten Scoundrels stars Martin as a low class con artist who makes a bet with a high class confidence man (Caine) to see who can swindle an heiress out of $50,000 (and sex) first. It later was adapted into a successful stage musical in 2005. The new version will update the story by putting the focus on two lady cons attempting to get money from a rich tech prodigy.

Anne Hathaway returned to Wonderland last year for James Bobin’s Alice Through the Looking Glass. She can be seen coming up in Nacho Vigalondo’s kaiju drama Colossal. She’s also slated to appear in the upcoming female-driven Ocean’s Eleven spinoff, Ocean’s Eight. Wilson, meanwhile, starred last year in the ensemble romantic comedy How to Be Single and appeared opposite Mark Strong and Sacha Baron Cohen in Grimsby. She’s currently filming the third chapter in the Pitch Perfect series.
