Joaquin Phoenix and Gus Van Sant Reteam for John Callahan Biopic

After he gave Joaquin Phoenix (Walk the Line, The Master, Her) an early shot-in-the-arm to his career by casting him in 1995’s To Die For, filmmaker Gus Van Sant (Milk, The Sea of Trees) may reteam with the actor. Variety is reporting that Van Sant may direct and Phoenix star in Don’t Worry, He Won’t Get Far on Foot, a biopic of Portland’s quadriplegic cartoonist John Callahan.

After becoming paralyzed in a car accident at age 21, Callahan took up cartooning by clutching a pen between both of his hands. His work was darkly comedic, and was eventually published in the likes of The New Yorker, Penthouse, and Playboy before his death in 2010. The late Robin Williams, who also worked with Van Sant on Good Will Hunting, pursued the idea of playing Callahan for many years after reading his autobiography in 1989.

Iconoclast’s Charles-Marie Anthonioz, Mourad Belkeddar, and Nicolas Lhermitte will produce Don’t Worry, He Won’t Get Far on Foot alongside Steve Golin of Anonymous Content.
