Leonardo DiCaprio to Produce Captain Planet Movie

Leonardo DiCaprio is among the producers on an upcoming Captain Planet movie

Planned for the big screen for some time, it looks like a Captain Planet movie may finally become a reality. The Hollywood Reporter today brings word that Leonardo DiCaprio‘s Appian Way Productions is teaming with Paramount Pictures for a live-action take on the environmentally-minded animated series.

Scream Queens star Glen Powell and writing partner Jono Matt are attached to provide the screenplay for the Captain Planet movie, inspired by the Turner Broadcasting and DIC Enterprises cartoon, Captain Planet and the Planeteers. The series premiered in 1990 and ran for six seasons.

“Our world is in peril,” goes the narration at the start of every Captain Planet episode. “Gaia, the spirit of the Earth, can no longer stand the terrible destruction plaguing our planet. She gives five magic rings to five special young people. From Africa, Kwame with the power of earth. From the North America, Wheeler with the power of fire. From the Soviet Union, Linka with the power of wind. From Asia, Gi with the power of water and from South America, Ma-Ti with the power of heart. With the five powers combined they summon earth’s greatest champion: Captain Planet!”

Voice talents on the original animated series included stars like Whoopi Goldberg, Margot Kidder, Levar Burton, Tim Curry, David Warner and many more. Although the show’s first season was released on DVD by Shout! Factory some years back, the rest of the series is still MIA on the home entertainment front.

DiCaprio will produce the Captain Planet movie alongside Appian Way’s Jennifer Davisson Killoran.
