Over 75 Hasbro Star Wars & Marvel Photos from NYCC

This week at New York Comic Con, we attended Hasbro‘s ‘Twas The Night Before Party where we saw (and, yes, played with) lots of new toys in their upcoming Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and Doctor Strange lines, as well as many from their Marvel Legends series influenced by the comic books. We also had the chance to interview several key members of the design teams, and take lots of photos. Check out over 75 Hasbro Star Wars and Marvel photos in the gallery below!

The Strange output is led by Dr. Stephen Strange and Baron Karl Mordo figures that bear a striking resemblance to actors Benedict Cumberbatch and Chiwetel Ejiofor. While other figures like The Ancient One and the Zealots are in development, these two were the only ones to make it to production before the film’s November 4 release date.

“We were lucky to be able to work with Marvel to get great reference on the different characters and their costumes, which are incredibly elaborate,” Hasbro’s design manager Dwight Stall told us. “Probably some of the most elaborate costuming that we’ve seen so far on the actual human characters in the MCU. Our Benedict figure we’re super proud of. We’ve got great textures and details interwoven in his costume based off of all the different fabrics in the film. We got to see the actual costume at San Diego Comic-Con and take some extra reference photos and use those as guides to make sure we were on track to delivering as good of a finished product as possible. We gave him alternate hands, a spell effect inspired by some of the concept art we received by the studio, which is great. They’re always sharing not just principal photography but some of the more artistic renderings of what those things could look like because we need to make our toys way in advance of the final CGI that goes into a film.”

These days, Hasbro relies almost 100% on scans of actors and computer model-based printing as opposed to hand-made sculpts, although some hands-on work is occasionally required for minor touch-ups.

When it comes to the Rogue One figures, there’s one toy that is destined to outsell all others this Christmas: Darth Vader.

“When we found out he was going to be in ‘Rogue One’ we were clearly very excited,” said Hasbro Star Wars design director Steve Evans. “We’d done Darth before. We’d done him from Episode VI with removable helmet, we’ve done him for Emperor’s Wrath, and there’s been a lot of chatter within the fan communities of, ‘Just give me the quintessential Darth Vader.’ When we found out he was going to be the Episode IV/’A New Hope’ Darth – or three weeks prior – it was like, ‘Ahhh, now’s the time.’ We took out the old photos and noticed some interesting things, like his left cheek plate is painted silver for lighting purposes. So we’ve deco’d that like that. The sculptor had a whale of a time just coming up with the quintessential Vader, so we’re really pleased about that, to do an evergreen character.”
