Sully Wins a Second Weekend, Suicide Squad Crosses $400M Internationally

Warner Bros. PicturesSully continued to top the domestic box office this weekend with another $22 million to bring its two-week total to $70.5 million. Internationally, the Clint Eastwood-directed film added $7 million from 44 territories for an overseas total of $23.4 million and global sum of $93.9 million. Made for $60 million before marketing expenses, the drama stars Tom Hanks, Aaron Eckhart and Laura Linney.

Lionsgate‘s Blair Witch opened in second place with an estimated $9.7 million from 3,121 theaters, an average of $3,092 per location. While the sequel to The Blair Witch Project was expected to open bigger, the film cost just $5 million to make. Still, the film directed by Adam Wingard from a Simon Barrett script, received a shockingly low D+ CinemaScore from audiences, which does not bode well for its future box office earnings.

Also opening below expectations was Bridget Jones’s Baby (Universal), which earned $8.2 million in third place from 2,927 theaters, an average of $2,815 per theater. Internationally, the third installment opened in 39 territories where it performed better with $29.9 million, for a worldwide total of $38.1 million. Made for $35 million, the Sharon Maguire-directed film stars Renée Zellweger, Colin Firth, Patrick Dempsey, Jim Broadbent, Gemma Jones, and Emma Thompson. Bridget Jones’s Baby received a B+ CinemaScore from audiences.

Screen Gems’ Don’t Breathe rounded out the top five with $5.6 million and has grossed $75.3 million domestically in four weeks. Made for less than $10 million, Don’t Breathe was directed by Fede Alvarez and stars Jane Levy, Dylan Minnette, Daniel Zovatto and Stephen Lang.

Screen Gems also held the sixth spot with When the Bough Breaks, which added $5.5 million its second weekend for a total of $22.7 million. Made for $10 million and directed by Jon Cassar, the thriller stars Morris Chestnut, Regina Hall and Jaz Sinclair.

Warner Bros.’ Suicide Squad and Illumination/Universal’s The Secret Life of Pets also crossed major marks this weekend.

The Secret Life of Pets, meanwhile, is crossing the $800 million mark at the worldwide box office today. The film has earned an estimated $363.4 million domestically where it had the best opening for an original film, animated or otherwise, and grossed $441.6 million internationally, where it has opened No. 1 in 42 markets to date. With an estimated $805 million, The Secret Life of Pets is the sixth-highest-grossing film of 2016 at the worldwide box office. With last week’s worldwide grosses, Illumination titles (Despicable Me, Hop, Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax, Despicable Me 2, Minions, The Secret Life of Pets) have crossed $4 billion worldwide since the company’s first release in 2010.
