Don’t Breathe Tops Box Office, Jason Bourne Big in China

After a three-week reign by Suicide Squad, Screen Gems’ Don’t Breathe took over the top spot at the domestic box office with an estimated $26.1 million from 3,051 theaters, an average of $8,559 per theater. Made for just $9.9 million, the Fede Alvarez-directed thriller stars Jane Levy, Dylan Minnette, Daniel Zovatto, and Stephen Lang. In Don’t Breathe, a group of friends break into the house of a wealthy blind man, thinking they’ll get away with the perfect heist. The R-rated film received a B+ CinemaScore from audiences.

Jason Bourne (Universal Pictures) topped the international box office, grossing $56.8 million, with an impressive $50 million of that total coming from China its first six days. Domestically, the Matt Damon-starrer came in at No. 9 with $5.2 million its fifth weekend and a total of $149.6 million. Overseas, the Paul Greengrass-directed film has earned $198.5 million for a worldwide sum of $347.9 million. It cost $120 million to make.

Back in North America, Warner Bros.‘ Suicide Squad dropped a spot to second with $12.1 million. The David Ayer-directed comic book adaptation has earned $282.9 million domestically. Internationally, the film added $19.6 million from 65 territories and the total now stands at $353.1 million. Worldwide, Suicide Squad has earned $635.9 million. Made for $175 million, Suicide Squad stars Will Smith, Margot Robbie, Joel Kinnaman, Viola Davis, Jai Courtney, Jay Hernandez, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Ike Barinholtz, Scott Eastwood, Cara Delevingne, Adam Beach, and Karen Fukuhara.

Climbing a spot to third place was LAIKA’s Kubo and the Two Strings (Focus Features), which earned $7.9 million its second weekend for a total of $24.9 million. Produced for about $60 million, the Travis Knight-directed film features the voices of Art Parkinson, Matthew McConaughey, Charlize Theron, Rooney Mara, Ralph Fiennes, George Takei, Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa and Brenda Vaccaro.

Dropping two spots to fourth, Sony Pictures’ Sausage Party added $7.7 million for a three-week total of $80 million. Made for just $19 million, the R-rated animated comedy is voiced by Seth Rogen, Kristen Wiig, Salma Hayek, Edward Norton, David Krumholtz, Nick Kroll, Michael Cera, James Franco, Jonah Hill, Craig Robinson, Bill Hader, Anders Holm, Paul Rudd, and Danny McBride.

Opening in fifth place was Lionsgate’s Summit Entertainment’s Mechanic: Resurrection with an estimated $7.5 million from 2,258 theaters, an average of $3,322. Receiving a B+ CinemaScore, the action film was directed by Dennis Gansel and stars Jason Statham, Jessica Alba, Tommy Lee Jones, and Michelle Yeoh.

Pete’s Dragon earned $7.3 million in the sixth spot its third weekend to bring its total to $54.7 million domestically. Overseas, the film has grossed $21.5 million for a worldwide total of $76.2 million so far. Made for $65 million, the Disney release was directed by David Lowery and stars Bryce Dallas Howard, Oakes Fegley, Wes Bentley, Karl Urban, Oona Laurence and Robert Redford.

Warner Bros.’ War Dogs dropped four spots to seventh its second weekend. The film grossed $7.3 million for a total of $27.8 million so far. War Dogs also generated $5.3 million over the weekend from 41 overseas markets, bringing the international total to $14.9 million. The film stars Jonah Hill, Miles Teller, Ana de Armas, Kevin Pollak and Bradley Cooper.

In week five of release, STX Entertainment’s Bad Moms remained in eighth place and took in $5.76 million for a total of $95.4 million. The comedy also opened in 13 new international markets and earned $6.3 million in 46 total markets. The estimated international sum is now $28.7 million and worldwide total is at $124.1 million. Bad Moms stars Mila Kunis, Kristen Bell, Kathryn Hahn, Jay Hernandez, Annie Mumolo, Jada Pinkett Smith and Christina Applegate.

Dropping nearly 60% in ticket sales its second weekend, Paramount Pictures’ Ben-Hur rounded out the top 10 with $4.5 million and $19.5 million total. Internationally, the film added $6.3 million for an overseas total of $21 million. The Timur Bekmambetov-directed film stars Jack Huston, Toby Kebbell, Toby Kebbell, Morgan Freeman, Rodrigo Santoro, Nazanin Boniadi, Ayelet Zorer, and Sofia Black-D’Elia.

Also of note is 20th Century Fox’s Ice Age: Collision Course, which took second place at the international box office this weekend with $50 million from 37 markets, with $42.5 million of that total coming from China. While the domestic total has reached just $61.7 million, the international total now stands at $306 million.
