Denzel Washington is eyeing the lead in Dan Gilroy’s next, Inner City

Although the trade likens Inner City to Sidney Lumet’s 1982 courtroom drama The Verdict, details on its specific plot are currently few outside of the fact that the story, like Nightcrawler, is set in Los Angeles.

Gilroy earned himself an Academy Award nomination for his original Nightcrawler screenplay. Prior to sitting in the director’s chair on the 2014 thriller, Gilroy made a name for himself as a screenwriter, scripting films like Freejack, The Fall and The Bourne Legacy.

Washington, who himself won Oscars for his performances in both Glory and Training Day, last headlined 2014’s The Equalizer. He next reteams with Training Day and The Equalizer helmer Antoine Fuqua for next month’s western ensemble The Magnificent Seven. Also starring Chris Pratt, Ethan Hawke, Vincent D’Onofrio, Byung Hun Lee, Manuel Garcia Rulfo, Martin Sensmeier, Haley Bennett, Matt Bomer, Billy Slaughter, Vinnie Jones and Peter Sarsgaard, The Magnificent Seven will be released by Sony Pictures and MGM on September 23.

Jennifer Fox, who previously worked with Gilroy on Nightcrawler, will again serve as producer on Inner City. Check back for casting updates on the project as they become available.
