Tom Hanks Attached to Play Heroic Captain

Tom Hanks looks likely to headline Columbia Picture’s untitled big screen adapation of the harrowing true-life ordeal of Captain Richard Phillips. ComingSoon.net has confirmed that the star is attached (though no deal is said to currently be in place).

Phillips captained the MV Maersk Alabama which, in April of 2009, was hijacked by Somali pirates. Phillips bravely offered himself as a hostage to protect his crew and spent three days a prisoner before being rescued by a team of U.S. Navy SEALS.

The sale of the project, based off Phillip’s memoir, “A Captain’s Duty: Somali Pirates, Navy SEALS, and Dangerous Days at Sea,” was announced for development last year with producers Michael DeLuca, Kevin Spacey, Dana Brunetti and Scott Rudin.
