Paranormal Activity 2 Brings Home $41.5 Million

Paramount Pictures’ Paranormal Activity 2 took over the box office this weekend, earning an estimated $41.5 million from 3,216 theaters. It’s a new record for a horror movie, surpassing the $40.6 million set by the Friday the 13th remake in 2009. Made for just $3 million, the Tod Williams-directed film starring Katie Featherston, Micah Sloat, Brian Boland, Molly Ephraim and Sprague Grayden, averaged an impressive $12,904 per location. The 2009 original opened to $77,873 from 12 theaters and then expanded wide with $21.1 million this same weekend last year on its way to $193.4 million worldwide. Paranormal Activity 2 topped the international box office this weekend as well with $22.1 million from 2,913 screens.

Paramount also took the second spot as Jackass 3D added $21.6 million its second weekend for a total of $87.1 million. While that’s a 57.1% drop in ticket sales, the third film cost just $20 million to make.

Summit’s graphic novel adaptation RED dropped a spot to third and just 31.1%, earning $15 million for a two-week total of $43.5 million. The action comedy was produced for $58 million.

After opening in limited theaters last week, Clint Eastwood’s Hereafter expanded wide into 2,181 theaters in which the drama collected $12 million, an average of $5,504 per site. Made for about $50 million, the Warner Bros. release stars Matt Damon, Cecile de France, Frankie McLaren, George McLaren, Jay Mohr and Bryce Dallas Howard.

Sony’s The Social Network rounded out the top five with $7.3 million, bringing its four-week total to $72.9 million so far.
