Josh Boone revealed to be at work on an Interview with the Vampire remake

Back in August of 2014, Universal Pictures and Imagine Entertainment acquired the rights to Anne Rice’s “The Vampire Chronicles” book series, with TheWrap reporting that Josh Boone (Stuck in Love, The Fault in Our Stars) was attached to write and direct a film combining the second and third books in Rice’s series, “The Vampire Lestat” and “The Queen of the Damned.” Now Boone has revealed on Instagram that he has, in fact, penned a screenplay for an Interview with the Vampire remake alongside Jill Killington, with whom he wrote Katie Holmes’ recent directorial debut All We Had

The first installment in the novels, Interview with the Vampire, was made into a film in 1994 that stars Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt. A second film followed, Queen of the Damned, in 2002 with Aaliyah playing the eponymous bloodsucker and Stuart Townsend playing the vampire Lestat. There’s no specific word yet on Universal’s plans for the series, although a remake of Interview with the Vampire is the most obvious route for the studio to take. The most recent literary chapter in “The Vampire Chronicles,” “titled “Prince Lestat,”” hit bookstores in October of 2014, with another titled “Blood Paradise” forthcoming.

As reported two years ago, Brian Grazer will produce alongside Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, although the latter pair’s involvement with the Universal Monster Connected Universe of films may lead some to wonder if the Rice adaptations will be its own autonomous series or somehow connected to The Mummy, Invisible Man, etc. With Cruise starring in The Mummy, the idea of crossing Lestat over seems a little preposterous. Back in 2009, Robert Downey Jr. was rumored to be in contention for Lestat, though Rice fans should keep an eye out for who Universal actually casts.

Boone is also hard at work on a New Mutants movie for 20th Century Fox, as well as several Stephen King adaptations.
