Sicario Sequel Already Being Planned

The Sicario sequel will follow Benicio Del Toro’s character

Although the first film won’t even open in wide release until this Friday, September 25, Variety is reporting that Lionsgate is already making movement on a Sicario sequel. That’s due in no small part to the massive success of the film’s performance so far. Although it’s currently only playing on six screens, Sicario grossed an average of $66,881 per sceen, marking the highest per screen average for any film this year.

Directed by Denis Villeneuve (PrisonersEnemy), Sicario is scripted by “Sons of Anarchy” scribe Taylor Sheridan and follows FBI agent Kate (Emily Blunt, Into the Woods, Edge of Tomorrow) and her conflicting journey that descends into the intrigue, corruption and moral mayhem of the borderland drug wars. In the lawless border area stretching between the U.S. and Mexico, Kate is exposed to the brutal world of international drug trafficking by members of a government task force who have enlisted her in their plan to take out a Mexican cartel boss.

According to the trade, the Sicario sequel will follow the character played by Academy Award winner Benicio Del Toro (Traffic, Guardians of the Galaxy).

“Before the release of this movie, I was talking to Denis and I said, ‘What happened to this character?’” says Lionsgate Co-Chairman Patrick Wachsberger. “Where is Benicio going?”

The cast of Sicario also includes Academy Award nominee Josh Brolin (No Country For Old Men, Inherent Vice), along with Jon Bernthal (“The Walking Dead,” Fury), and Emmy Award nominee Victor Garber (“Alias,” “The Flash”). Producers include Basil Iwanyk, Edward L. McDonnell, Molly Smith and Thad and Trent Luckinbill.
