New Spider-Man Actor Expected This Week, Here’s the List in Contention

According to a report over at The Hollywood Reporter, Marvel and Sony are still looking for their Spider-man. Earlier reports suggesting Asa Butterfield (Hugo, Ender’s Game) was about to sign for the role were apparently a bit premature. He’s still in the running, however, along with five other young hopefuls, for the prized role. Could this be a negotiation tactic used by Sony to get Butterfield? Possibly. The good news is the search should be concluded by next week.

Butterfield is joined by Avengers: Infinity War.

I believe this is still Asa Butterfield’s role to lose. Of the group of young actors, he’s the most experienced. It’s hard to believe Marvel and Sony would be willing to give the starring role of this multi-billion dollar franchise to a completely unknown actor (next to Butterfield, Holland has the most experience), though that doesn’t mean it’s a foregone conclusion. It’s clear Marvel and Sony are performing an exhaustive search to ensure the next Spider-man is a satisfactory incarnation as it’s one we’ll likely have for the next 10 years.

After the announcement Spider-Man would be appearing in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, expectations for the film series have gone through the roof. Fans are hoping Marvel Studios have what it takes to return this beloved character to his former glory. Who will wear the suit and swing from the rooftops? If reports are to be believed, we’ll find out in the next week.
