‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’ a Disappointment? Box Office Actuals Up to $191.2 Million Opening

Was Avengers: Age of Ultron a box office disappointment this weekend or was The Avengers just an overwhelming success back in 2012? I honestly can’t agree with anyone that calls a film that has grossed over $630 million in 12 days and has the second highest opening weekend ever a disappointment. Especially when you consider it was up against not only the typical sporting allotment of the Kentucky Derby, NBA and NHL Playoffs, but the Mayweather & Pacquiao fight (which damn near broke pay-per-view) and one of the NBA playoff games was a Game 7. No matter what you think, those final two notes are going to take a chunk out of your revenue.

Today the actuals for the weekend came in and the total was nearly $4 million higher than the estimated $187.6 million reported yesterday morning as the film finished with $191.2 million for its first three days. When it comes to records, that’s $16.2 million behind The Avengers and $17.1 million more than the third place Iron Man 3 as Marvel no owns the three largest opening weekends of all-time.

The film is also credited for helping IMAX secure their highest grossing weekend ever at the global box office. Age of Ultron amassed a record-setting $25.2 million in IMAX theatres globally, $18 million of that number from 364 IMAX screens domestically for a $50,000 per-screen average. Moreover, IMAX represented 8 of the film’s top 10 domestic opening locations.
