Michael Mann Lines Up Next Feature, Ferrari Story ‘Go Like Hell’

It was not a fun experience watching Michael Mann‘s Blackhat. Not only was it a terrible film, but it was a terrible film from one of my favorite filmmakers, a filmmaker that seems to be moving closer to the lackluster output of Ridley Scott and farther away from the man that made the likes of Collateral, The Insider and Heat. So, just as my interest in Scott’s The Martian isn’t too high, I can’t say I’m all that intrigued when it comes to Mann’s next project, which Variety reports is the long-gestating “Ferrari” biopic, about Italian automotive mogul Enzo Ferrari.

We first reported on this project back in Go Like Hell: Ford, Ferrari, and Their Battle for Speed and Glory at Le Mans” with a script by Jason Keller (Escape Plan) telling the true story of the 1960s rivalry between Ford and Ferrari that culminated with Ford’s GT40 becoming the first car to win the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The script’s human element focuses on Henry Ford II, who leads a team of gearheads set on reinventing the Ford Motor Co. by entering the high-stakes world of European car racing.

[amz asin=”0385263198″ size=”small”]It sounds as if the project has changed since then, however, as it will be based on Brock Yates‘ book “Enzo Ferrari: The Man, The Cars, The Races, The Machine” and ultimately merging two different drafts of the script, one by Troy Kennedy Martin (The Italian Job) and the other by David Rayfield (Out of Africa), both based on Yates’ book.

This new version sounds as if it is more of a straight up story about Enzo Ferrari with sights set on a 2016 start date. It also sounds as if Fox is no longer involved and, the Variety story stresses this is separate from another version of the Ferrari story which has Robert De Niro attached to star, though wouldn’t it just make sense to bring Mann and De Niro back together and just make one movie?
