‘Everest’, ‘Good Kill’ and ‘Within’ in Today’s MPAA Ratings Bulletin

For whatever reason, seeing a PG-13 rating for Baltasar Kormakur‘s Everest is a little upsetting for me and lowers my anticipation a little. Not because I felt it was a story that needs a bunch of blood and gore, but I felt given its focus it would be a little more intense. Oh well, we’ll just have to wait and see as the rating does promise some “intense peril and disturbing images.”

This week also brings a rating for Good Kill from director Andrew Niccol starring Ethan Hawke as a fighter-pilot turned drone-pilot. It’s carrying an R-rating and the reason includes “violent content including a rape”. I’m probably ignorant of another time I’ve seen “rape” in a rating reason, and I’m sure it has happened way more than I realize, but I think that’s a smart addition on the part of the MPAA.

Finally there’s Within, a new thriller from New Line that was originally titled Crawlspace. The movie stars Nadine Velazquez and Michael Vartan and centers around a widower (Vartan) with a daughter who gets remarried and, after going through a rough patch of unemployment, gets the opportunity for a new start in a new house in the suburbs. Trouble is the house has a very disturbing secret from the past that rears up.
