Dwayne Johnson to Star as Black Adam in DC’s ‘Shazam’

black-adam-rockIt was Twitter, saying it is his “honor to become” the anti-hero Black Adam.

Variety adds to the news saying Turbo and Jack the Giant Slayer screenwriter Darren Lemke is penning the script with word the character will be more of an anti-hero than all-out villain as seen in recent issues of the DC comic book.

Shazam (aka Captain Marvel) is the alter ego of Billy Batson, transforms into superhero form by saying the words “Shazam,” and soon develops the powers of six mythological gods.

As far as the approach that will be taken to the character, New Line’s Toby Emmerich spoke with EW and said, “It feels to me like Shazam will have a tone unto itself. It’s a DC comic, but it’s not a Justice League character, and it’s not a Marvel comic. The tone and the feeling of the movie will be different from the other range of comic book movies.”

It also sounds like Emmerich definitely sees the character as a villain adding that while “[Shazam] will have a sense of fun and a sense of humor, the stakes have to be real… Black Adam is a complex character. The villain in superhero movies is often, I think, what makes the movie. And I thought Dwayne’s take on the character, and the way that he saw Black Adam, was really compelling and fun.”

No telling when we’ll actually see this movie, however. No director has been announced and there’s no official word on how far into the scripting process Lemke is. So, for now, just bask in Johnson’s tweet.
