Dimension Makes Up ‘Sin City 2’ Controversy for Press… It Worked

Perhaps one of the most blatant scams to drum up some controversial press happened this morning when Dimension Films publicity sent an email that read, “The MPAA is too prude for the Sin City Eva Green poster, according to media sources,” with a link to a Page Six article by Emily Smith reading:

Eva Green is just too sexy for the poster of her upcoming sequel to “Sin City,” or so the MPAA believes.

The actress is seen in a sheer robe in the poster for Dimension Films’ and Frank Miller’s “Sin City: A Dame to Kill For.”

We’re told the poster was disapproved by the MPAA “for nudity — curve of under breast and dark nipple/areola circle visible through sheer gown.”

Dimension declined to comment but it is believed execs are working on a compromise with the MPAA before the sequel opens Aug. 22.

Here is the poster in all its hi-res glory.

Now here is what I love about this tactic. First, the subject line of the email read, “EXCLUSIVE: MPAA TOO PRUDE FOR SIN CITY.” I don’t know what the “exclusive” pertained to, but okay. Then you get to the article where Smith writes, “Dimension declined to comment.” I’m pretty sure we can all call bullshit on this… right? Especially considering the Page Six article has the hi-res version of the poster accompanied by an email blast to every movie blogger in the country.

Dimension is smartly taking advantage of the silly nature of the MPAA (because, honestly, we all know someone at the MPAA simply got aroused and felt dirty about it so they slapped this poster down), but if that’s not a comment then I don’t know what is unless Smith is having a hard time reading between the lines.

And to suggest “it is believed” they are working on a compromise is just a blatant attempt to market the release date. How’s this for a compromise…

That said, I sure do hope they come to a compromise and figure out an acceptable way to market Sin City: A Dame to Kill For by the time the movie directed by Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller hits theaters on August 22 in digital 3d and Real D 3D. Otherwise how would we ever know?
