A ‘Goonies’ Sequel? Really?

It’s funny how so many on the Internet love to lament the lack of original storytelling in movies as sequels and reboots dominate the landscape. But mention some movie that was loved during the mid-’80s, when so many of today’s movie-obsessed Internet commenters and bloggers grew up, and suddenly it’s as if not only is a sequel something they want, but it becomes something to celebrate.

The latest such unnecessary, but “exciting” development is The Goonies director Richard Donner telling the gossip site TMZ.com, “We’re doing a sequel,” and when asked who from the original cast is coming back his response was all-inclusive, “Hopefully all of them!” Oh, yes, hopefully.

The last time I remember hearing about a possible Goonies II was about seven years ago when Sean Astin made mention of a story that would center around the children of the original cast. An original cast that included Astin along with Josh Brolin, Jeff Cohen, Corey Feldman, Kerri Green, Martha Plimpton, Jonathan Ke Quan and John Matuszak as Sloth.

The question is, will this become something that will be able to capture that sense of wonder and adventure from the original and translate it into the modern age to not only satisfy longtime fans, but also entertain a new generation? Or… will this just be another Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull?
