Jamie Chung on Snyder’s Sucker Punch

On Friday, September 11th, moviegoers will be able to see Jamie Chung in the horror-thriller remake Sorority Row. Next up, she’ll star in director Zack Snyder’s action-thriller Sucker Punch and ComingSoon.net talked to Chung about the role.

Q: What can you tell us about “Sucker Punch”?

Jamie Chung: I can tell you that I’m really excited to work with Zack Snyder. He is the happiest person in the world, it’s crazy! He’s always smiling, it’s insane. The girls that they cast, we just had the table read on Friday. And it really brought things to life, because we were in the room with all the art work up and his vision – it’s insane how the kindest person in the world can think of something so dark. (Laughs) But it’s a crazy story about – it takes place in the 1950’s and it’s a story about a girl who’s put into an insane asylum against her will by her evil stepfather. And she goes into these fever dreams to escape. Somehow her alternate reality affects her reality, just like in ‘Alice in Wonderland.’ All of the characters in her fever dreams are from her real life. And the girls plan to escape and they come up with a plan and things go terribly wrong and it really does affect her reality. It’s a great story and there’s amazing, amazing fight sequences. It puts ‘300’ to shame! It’s the same stunt guys – 8711. Damon (Caro) and Logan, the trainer. But it really is ‘300’ but with a female cast. It’s really empowering. It’s powerful, there’s machine guns! The girls have been training for 12 weeks, so you can only imagine. The girls are lifting 210 pounds. I’m coming in (thinking) “Oh my God! What am I getting myself into?” (Laughs) I’m sore and I’ve got the bruises to show it, but these girls are working so incredibly hard and the team is so tight, like… I can go on and on. I’m so excited about this project. To be a part of it? I’m so grateful, I’m still pinching myself. But it’s going to be a fantastic movie and the fight sequences are insane and the visuals are going to be out of this world.

Q: Where does your character fit into “Sucker Punch”?

Chung: My character is one of the four girls that tries to help our lead hero escape. (Played by) Emily Browing. Yeah.

Q: Just to clarify in “Sucker Punch,” do you have two characters? One in the real world and one in the fever dreams?

Chung: (Pause) I… guess yes, we all do.

Q: Can you tell us about the two different characters you have?

Chung: I do not think I can do it. (Laughs)

Q: Will we understand what the title means?

Chung: Absolutely. It all makes sense. It’s one of those smart movies that I hadn’t seen in a while. It’s awesome.

Q: Does it have a dark sense of humor? Or is it straight up dark?

Chung: It’s pretty dark. It’s PG-13 but it’s pretty dark. It’s a great adventure. Yes.

Q: Quite a progression for your career to go from reality to “Samurai Girl” to this and now Zack Snyder’s movie.

Chung: Are you kidding me? I mean, when I heard I got the part – it still hasn’t hit me! It won’t hit me until we start shooting and there’s enough footage where they can’t recast me. (Laughs) That is when I’ll relax. The actors’ audition is never done. You have to be on your A game to do this project. And it’s a dream come true. So there’s nothing I want to do to screw it up.

Sucker Punch is scheduled for a March 25, 2011 release. Vanessa Hudgens, Abbie Cornish, Jena Malone, Carla Gugino, Jon Hamm and Oscar Isaac also co-star.
