For Despicable 2, Laremy went with $91.9 million while the readers is just slightly under at $91.6 million. The animated sequel got off to a great start on Wednesday, bringing in $34.3 million and after two days has already made more than the original film’s $56 million opening weekend. Question is, can it maintain such momentum over the Friday-Sunday frame? Based on these predictions it would seem so.
As for The Lone Ranger, things don’t look so pretty. Budgeted anywhere from $215-250+ million depending on who you believe, the film opened to a paltry $9.6 million on Wednesday and put up similar numbers a day later. Laremy predicted an eventual $45.9 million for the three-day weekend while the readers went a little lower at $39.1 million. At this point I’m going to have to lean more to the readers, but either way, it’s not the opening Disney was hoping for.
Looking over the two holdovers, both Laremy and the readers think a 46.9% drop for Monsters University is about right as both predict a $24.2 million weekend. There’s a small disparity in The Heat predictions with readers predicting a 42.9% drop from its opening weekend and Laremy expecting a slightly larger fall at 47.8%.
I also wanted to reiterate what was posted in yesterday’s Box Office Oracle article. I am putting together a second leaderboard for the Box Office Challenge that will track overall prediction accuracy. So, there will be one leaderboard that continues to track your point totals and after about five to six weeks I will launch the second leaderboard and you’ll have two places to see your name in lights.
The requirements to be on the second leaderboard will be that you will have to have posted predictions for at least five weeks to be on it, which is why I may even wait six to seven weeks before launching it as this is a brand new feature and people are still getting used to posting.
