‘Man of Steel’ Friday Box Office; On Track for Best June Opening Ever

Man of Steel brought in $12 million from early Thursday screenings and midnight showings and on Friday the superhero film added an estimated $44.1 million to that total, bringing its early one-and-a-half-day tally up to $56.1 million.

Take the Thursday numbers out and you’re looking at a likely opening weekend around $120 million and with an “A-” CinemaScore and the fact this weekend is Father’s Day you may see a stronger hold than normal. Then again, with the U.S. Open, Stanley Cup Finals and NBA Finals all this weekend, that could also takeaway from the film’s opening.

Of course, that number won’t touch Iron Man 3‘s $174.1 million opening, though it will serve as the second largest opening of the year so far. It will also top Toy Story 3‘s $110.3 million opening in 2010 for the largest June opening ever.

Additionally, new release This is the End brought in $6.8 million on Friday and Sony Classics finally opened Before Midnight nationwide and it managed $425,000 from 893 theaters while Sofia Coppola‘s new release, The Bling Ring, brought in $77,000 from only five theaters.

Here’s Friday’s top five:

  1. Man of Steel – $44 million
  2. This is the End – $6.8 million
  3. Now You See Me – $3.3 million
  4. The Purge – $2.9 million
  5. Fast & Furious 6 – $2.7 million
