Thanks to my visit to Cannes I no longer have to cite Side Effects as the only good movie of 2013 so far. In fact, once Friday rolls around another one of my favorite films of 2013 hits theaters in the form of Before Midnight.
However, back to Side Effects, a truly fantastic, smart and intriguing film from Steven Soderbergh. The disc arrived shortly before I had to leave for Cannes so I haven’t had a chance to watch it again, but I did see it twice in theaters and will welcome another visit once I get back home.
True Blood: The Complete Fifth Season
I started watching this right before I left for Cannes as well and actually took the DVD discs with me to Cannes, hoping I’d have some opportunity to watch at least a couple more episodes. No dice. I really enjoy the “True Blood” series for how outrageous and crazy it is. I’m not sure I’d call it “good”, but I think something along the lines of “entertaining trash” seems to fit.
Cleopatra (50th Anniversary Edition)
I really like this movie and I love the story behind its making. I’m not sure if a review copy of this came to me or not seeing how I haven’t been home for a while, but it’s a title I’d entertain the thought of buying. I wrote about it back in 2011 when I saw it in 70mm at the Seattle Cinerama and it’s actually playing here in Cannes in the Cannes Classics section. Unfortunately time doesn’t allow us to watch four hour movies we’ve already seen while here in the Riviera.
A solid little YA film that didn’t get the attention it deserved. A thousand times better than anything in the Twilight franchise, but what can you do?
I never saw this as it seemed like they were trying to position it for awards attention (most of it focusing on the original song by Bon Jovi) and forgot they also had to release the actual film. I haven’t heard anything all that great about it so I never sought it out. Any of you see it?
Jason Statham is Parker and he does Statham-y things. You prepared?
