‘Jack Reacher’, ‘Upstream Color’ and ‘Band of Outsiders’ On DVD and Blu-ray Today

This Week On DVD and Blu-ray: May 7, 2013

Upstream Color
Shane Carruth‘s new film found its way into 43 theaters and grossed $352,400 over the course of 31 days and now the self-distributed picture finds its way to DVD and Blu-ray. I’ve already discussed the film and its meaning on more than one occasion (here) and certainly recommend you give it a look. I’m not entirely sure it is a film you simply must buy, but I’m certain those of you intrigued by its mysteries will enjoy diving in yourselves.

The Rabbi’s Cat
Perhaps the best animated film released last year, The Rabbi’s Cat was ignored by the Academy in favor of studio features. No surprise considering the worst Pixar film to date actually ended up winning the Oscar for Best Animated Feature. For those of you unafraid to watch a movie with subtitles, add Rabbi’s Cat to your queue, you won’t be sorry.

Jack Reacher
Jack Reacher on DVD Blu-ray today
As a big Tom Cruise fan I was quite disappointed in the simplicity of Jack Reacher. Now arriving on DVD and Blu-ray this is probably the best place for this film to be, it’s not a bad watch, just not something worthy of a theatrical outing.

Mama on DVD Blu-ray today
A lot of people enjoyed Mama, I’m not sure why. I never found a maternal connection as some viewers might and the constant diversions from the narrative in an attempt to scare the audience were more distracting than anything.

Safe Haven

Safe Haven is one of the craziest films of the last several years. I won’t spoil it’s third act secrets here, but I will direct you to my review from earlier this year for a bit of light reading.

The Oranges
The Oranges on DVD Blu-ray today
I saw this film a couple years ago in Toronto and it took forever to find its way into theaters and now onto DVD and Blu-ray. I enjoyed it when I saw it, but haven’t seen it since. It’s one of those “once is enough” kind of watches and at home it should satisfy a night on the couch.

The Great Escape
The Great Escape on DVD Blu-ray today
The Great Escape is descent, but I can’t say I feel the need to purchase a Blu-ray copy for my collection. I don’t consider it one of those “must own” classics that entertains me on a level where I suddenly feel the urge to watch it. For those of you that feel that urge, have at it.

Band of Outsiders (Criterion Collection)
Criterion is releasing the Blu-ray upgrade for Jean-Luc Godard‘s 1964 Band of Outsiders starring Anna Karina, Sami Frey and Claude Brasseur. I already own the DVD copy and can’t say I feel the urge to upgrade at the moment. As for the film, probably my most memorable moment, outside of the fascinating opening montage, is the following…
