Life of Pi
Life of Pi (Blu-ray 3-D) on DVD Blu-ray today
I don’t always include the 3-D Blu-ray version when I put together this column, but with Life of Pi that’s sort of the whole point right? I mean, if anyone talks about this movie the first, and sometimes only, thing they talk about are the visuals. Personally it was only an “okay” movie that I didn’t really think amounted to much, but I expect it will have a rather impressive life on the home video market following its Oscar wins.

The Blob (Criterion Collection) [Blu-ray]
The Blob (Criterion Collection) [Blu-ray]
I watched this Blu-ray on Sunday night and listened to the commentaries yesterday on and off throughout the day. This isn’t exactly a feature-rich release and we’re talking about more of a classic sci-fi film from the late ’50s with a nostalgia factor for some and a certain level of intrigue from cinephiles, but is it a “must buy”? The commentary with producer Jack H. Harris is certainly interesting and the picture is about as impressive as you’re going to get, but overall I think only hardcore Blob fans need to pick this one up.

Ministry of Fear (Criterion Collection)
Adapted from the novel by Graham Greene, this film from Fritz Lang I didn’t get to screen, though I wish I had. However, if The Blob is lacking in features, they are virtually non-existent on this release, coming with only the trailer and an interview with Fritz Lang scholar Joe McElhaney. Bit odd for a Criterion release nowadays.

Rise of the Guardians
Rise of the Guardians on DVD Blu-ray today
Here is a decent animated film and one that is certainly better than the Oscar-winner Brave. Yet, it never really found much traction at the box-office. Will it find any at home?

Smashed on DVD Blu-ray today
Solid rental though definitely not worth buying as watching a woman deal with alcoholism once should really be enough.

Hitchcock on DVD Blu-ray today
I didn’t mind this film as much as others seemed to, though I think some were looking for more of a straight-forward drama, while the performance from Anthony Hopkins could be looked at as more mimicry than an out-and-out performance. Yet, I thought it was light and fun, though definitely nothing worth rushing to see.

Never saw it and never had much desire to. Sean Penn plays a goth rocker who sets out to finish what his late father started, revenge for the lifetime of embarrassment he suffered as an ex-Nazi war criminal.

Sound City
Sound City
Now this documentary I actually really want to see and hopefully will before the year is out. Directed by Dave Grohl, it takes a look at the famed recording studio that was located in Van Nuys, California and the legendary recording console that not only recorded the sounds of Nirvana, but also those of Neil Young, Fleetwood Mac, Tom Petty, Cheap Trick, Guns and Roses, Fear, Nirvana, Rage Against the Machine, Slipknot, Nine Inch Nails, Metallica, and countless other musical legends over the past 40 years.
