Top 50 Most Anticipated Movies of 2013: Part Three – #21-30

#23

Rush

September 20

If Ron Howard doesn’t get overly sentimental with this picture, I think Rush could be one of the surprise, great films of 2013.

Set in the 1970s, the story follows the on the track and off lives of Formula-1 race stars James Hunt (Chris Hemsworth) and Niki Lauda (Daniel Bruhl) and their racing teams of McLaren and Ferrari. The script was written by Peter Morgan (Frost/Nixon) and watching the previously release featurette below was enough to get me excited when it was released back in May 2012.

Prisoners

September 20

I have still not seen Denis Villeneuve‘s Incendies, despite all the buzz, both positive and negative, that surrounded the film’s release back in 2011. However, that buzz, the story and the cast of Prisoners has me excited to see it.

The story revolves around a small-town carpenter named Keller (Hugh Jackman) whose young daughter and her best friend are kidnapped. After the cops fail to find them, Keller takes the law into his own hands, but in the process runs up against Detective Loki (Jake Gyllenhaal), a hot shot cop with confidence to burn, assigned to the case.

Along with Jackman and Gyllenhaal the film stars Melissa Leo, Paul Dano, Viola Davis, Maria Bello and Terrence Howard.

Warner Bros. has stuck with this film for the longest time as Antoine Fuqua and Bryan Singer have both been attached, but finally things came together with Villeneuve following his success with Incendies and considering the helmer’s Canadian roots and that September 20 release date I think we can pretty much count on a Toronto premiere.

Oblivion

April 12

My anticipation for Oblivion has everything to do with seeing Tom Cruise in a sci-fi film and nothing to do with the fact it’s directed by TRON: Legacy helmer Joseph Kosinski. In fact, the latter information has me a little concerned as Legacy resulted in a visual feast telling a nothing story. I hope Oblivion doesn’t turn into the more of the same, or even worse, derivative, considering its already obvious close ties to Pixar’s WALL•E.

Set on a future Earth, Cruise stars as Jack Harper, one of the last few drone repairmen stationed on the now nearly unrecognizable planet. Part of a massive operation to extract vital resources after decades of war with a terrifying threat known as the Scavs, Jack’s mission is nearly complete. Living and patrolling the breathtaking skies from thousands of feet above, his soaring existence is brought crashing down when he rescues a beautiful stranger from a downed spacecraft. Her arrival triggers a chain of events that forces him to question everything he knows and puts the fate of humanity in his hands.

Morgan Freeman, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Melissa Leo, Olga Kurylenko and Andrea Riseborough co-star.

The first trailer has already been released and can be viewed below.
