2013 Cinema Audio Society Sound Mixing Nominees

I’ll be posting my final 2013 Oscar nomination predictions tomorrow, while today I’m going through and attempting to fine tune a few things. Helping the process along slightly are the just announced 2013 Cinema Audio Society (CAS) nominations for Best Sound Mixing. I hadn’t updated the Sound Mixing or Sound Editing categories since first posting predictions on November 27, despite having one glaring omission from both categories.

Among the nominees for Best Sound Mixing in a Live Action motion picture is Lincoln and it wasn’t until watching the film again recently did the sound begin to truly stand out and I hadn’t even included it as one of the contenders in either Mixing or Editing. Consider that oversight corrected as I’ll discuss more in just a second.

As for the CAS nominees, the only one I have a question about is The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey as I’m truly surprised more hasn’t been said about the sound in Flight. After Denzel Washington, the sound and editing of that crash sequence are the only highlights left to mention and yet it seems to be a film people are only looking at for Best Actor and a potential Best Original Screenplay nomination. Go figure.

Otherwise, nominations for Les Misérables, Lincoln, Skyfall and Zero Dark Thirty seem about right as three of those I had in my first round of shot-in-the-dark predictions in the Sound Mixing category.

Here’s a look at the CAS nominees in both Live Action and Animation, the awards will be handed out on February 16. You can see all the nominees by clicking here for the official announcement.
