‘Frankenweenie’, ‘Dredd’ and ‘Two-Lane Blacktop’ are Out On DVD and Blu-ray This Week

This Week On DVD and Blu-ray: January 8, 2013

One title you’ll notice in the new release date section at the bottom of today’s post is the extended edition of The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1, a film that is already too long to begin with and yet somehow they have managed to find a way to add another eight minutes to it. Simply watching this trailer for the release leads me to continue to wonder what they possibly could have added in of any actual substance.

A report from Amazon France says the new release will include new opening credits as well as the following:

  • A new version of the opening scene with the Volturi.
  • Extended scene of Edward ‘s flashback as a young vampire.
  • New scene from the honeymoon.
  • 2 new scenes at the Cullens’ house.
  • Extended fight scene between Edward/Jacob and the wolves.
  • New scene of Jacob taking care of his wounds.

I must say, I’m a little surprised they are going with an extended version of Part One already and not going all the way back to the first one. I guess that’s in the plans for the future.

Let’s get to this week’s new releases…

Two-Lane Blacktop (Criterion) [Blu-ray]
Without question this is the best title on the block this week. I watched it on Saturday morning and afterward started powering through as many of the special features as I had time for. I’ll be writing up a full review shortly, but I’m inclined to agree with Richard Linklater’s sentiments from the included booklet where he calls it “the purest American road movie ever”. Granted, I’m sure I have plenty road movies left to see before I can make any kind of definitive statement, but Two-Lane Blacktop just may be the best one I’ve ever seen.

Frankenweenie on DVD Blu-ray today
I liked Frankenweenie and suggest, if you’re interested, you give it a watch, especially if you like Tim Burton and if you’re a fan of classic monster movies from Frankenstein to Godzilla. It may get a little too scary for the young ones so I’m not sure if it’s a title that necessitates a purchase since you could probably find other movies to pop in on a regular to keep the kids occupied, but this should satisfy as a solid one time rental.

Dredd on DVD Blu-ray today
One of these days I’m going to check this movie out, but I’m not going to make any special effort to do so. I’ve heard decent things from people I trust, but the opinion wasn’t so glowing I felt I needed to make Dredd a priority.

Hit and Run
Hit and Run on DVD Blu-ray today
I’ve heard this is funny and I do have a copy here at the house. Then again, I still want to find time to watch The Expendables 2 and neither title is at the top of my “must see” list at the moment. Could be a while.

Watching Samsara at home on a 50″ television isn’t how it was meant to be seen. It’s meant to be seen on the largest screen possible, but I guess if you must… you must. This was one of the better films I saw this past year, but it’s a movie that demands an immense screen because the wordless narrative is going to have most that give it a shot at home looking for something else to do. You have to go experience Samsara, the experience doesn’t as easily come to you.

I have a feeling Compliance is a film people will be stumbling upon over the coming years without expectation and I think the fact it’s based on a true story will be lost on most. People are able to believe in the stupidity of others to such an extent, but this film relives something almost too unbelievable that even when you know it’s true it’s still hard to believe it.

House at the End of the Street
House at the End of the Street on DVD Blu-ray today
I heard this film actually could have been good except the ending is a mess. That’s probably about as much as I will ever know about it outside of looking at that box art and having it remind me of the book jacket for [amazon asin=”0307740803″ text=”Robopocalypse”].

Look at Nic Cage… he’s all running from fire and stuff.
