‘Total Recall’, ‘Resident Evil’, ‘Premium Rush’ and More on DVD and Blu-ray This Week

This Week On DVD and Blu-ray: December 18, 2012

Total Recall
Total Recall [2012] on DVD Blu-ray today
Apparently the extended cut of Total Recall found on the Blu-ray is 12 minutes longer than what was shown in theaters. Thinking back on my theater experience I don’t remember a problem with narrative gaps as much as I had a problem with the film’s general ability to steal every single second of said narrative from previous films. I wonder of director Len Wiseman found a way to work even more scenes stolen from other sci-fi films into the running time. I guess I’ll never know. You can, however, revisit my “D-” theatrical review right here.

Arbitrage on DVD Blu-ray today
This was a pretty good film. I think it’s being propped up a bit higher than it necessarily deserves, but it’s solid, and worth a rental. You can read my theatrical review here.

Premium Rush
Premium Rush on DVD Blu-ray today
Now this may be the one film on the board to seriously consider buying, not because it’s necessarily good, but because it’s bat-shit crazy and when you’re home wanting to take a load off and just shut things down with some mindless entertainment this would work almost every time. Michael Shannon alone is reason enough to give this one a chance. You can read my theatrical review here.

Red Hook Summer

I was never offered a chance to screen Spike Lee’s Red Hook Summer and can’t even remember if it made its way to Seattle theaters. I’m pretty sure his Oldboy remake will be getting a lot more attention.

Pitch Perfect
So many people seem to love this film. So be it. I gave it a chance, and it’s not that I didn’t like it as much as it just wasn’t for me. Felt like a Disney Channel version of House Bunny with a dose of “Glee” added in and man was it long.

10 Years
10 Years on DVD Blu-ray today
I saw this film last year in Toronto when it was called Ten Year, you can read my review here. I have no idea how it has changed since then, but I think you can get by with a rental.

Resident Evil: Retribution
Releases December 21
Resident Evil: Retribution on DVD Blu-ray today
If you click the “Buy Now” link you’ll also see a boxset is for sale here that includes all five Resident Evil films for $59.99. It’s strange to think I’ve now missed the last two Resident Evil films and haven’t even thought twice about it. Not that I was some die hard fan, but about five years ago I probably would have made an effort to see a midnight release so I could review it. Interesting how tastes and evaluation of time well spent change as you get older.

Trouble with the Curve

Ugh, while there are some films worth checking out this week there are also some to stay far away from and Trouble with the Curve falls in the latter category. If you need further explaining my review.

I’ve heard this was pretty good. Not rush out and buy it good, but worth the watch.

Killer Joe
Killer Joe on DVD Blu-ray today
I wonder if the so-called “Director’s Cut” release is simply the NC-17 version that was released in theaters, because I do know there will be a cut of the film in stores referred to as Killer Joe: A Twisted Redneck Trailer Park Murder Story that has been edited down to an R rating, which is certainly not what Friedkin intended. For more on that, just check out my interview with him from earlier this year.

It made $76.5 million worldwide. That’s all I’ve got.

The Words
This one didn’t light the box-office on fire and I didn’t hear many good things about it and have still yet to see it.
