Critics’ Choice Awards: What are the Best Comedies of 2012?

I just received my ballot for the 2013 Critics Choice Movie Awards and have set up a spreadsheet with all the 2012 films I’ve seen or intend to see before nominations are due on Sunday, December 9 and there are some categories I’m certainly having trouble with — the genre categories being the toughest. So, I thought I would take it out to the readers to gauge what you think of the year in movies with regard to these categories and felt we would begin with comedies.

Here are the categories we’re discussing in this post:

  • Best Comedy
  • Best Actor in a Comedy
  • Best Actress in a Comedy

Now I have listed below 37 films you may or may not consider comedies from this past year and I say that because I’m not entirely convinced I should consider The Perks of Being a Wallflower, Silver Linings Playbook, Jeff, Who Lives at Home or even something like Safety Not Guaranteed a comedy, but are they? The decision is up to me, of course, but I don’t want to feel like my vote was wasted.

You’ll notice below there are a few films listed that I have not yet seen and they are identified by an * and of those I hope to watch Klown, God Bless America and Goon before I vote.

As it stands right now, I think my top ten would look something like this, assuming I don’t consider Perks, Silver Linings or Jeff to be comedies:

  1. Moonrise Kingdom
  2. Think Like a Man
  3. Safety Not Guaranteed
  4. Butter
  5. The Oranges
  6. Seven Psychopaths
  7. Bachelorette
  8. 21 Jump Street
  9. That’s My Boy
  10. The Watch

Yes, Ted was left off intentionally considering it wasn’t funny, though I did consider including Red Dawn because it was so bad it was almost funny.

As for the actor and actress categories my current picks would look like this, and they include supporting actors since I have to assume that’s allowed since there is no separate category.

Best Actor in a Comedy

  1. Christopher Walken (Seven Psychopaths)
  2. Tom Cruise (Rock of Ages)
  3. Channing Tatum (21 Jump Street)
  4. Sam Rockwell (Seven Psychopaths)
  5. Kevin Hart (Think Like a Man)

Best Actress in a Comedy

  1. Kara Hayward (Moonrise Kingdom)
  2. Kirsten Dunst (Bachelorette)
  3. Allison Janney (The Oranges)
  4. Aubrey Plaza (Safety Not Guaranteed)
  5. Rebel Wilson (Bachelorette)

Now check out the list below and if you believe I’ve missed any let me know and let me know what your favorites are.
