Stallone’s ‘Bullet to the Head’ Gets Solid Reviews Out of Rome and a Batch of 13 New Pictures

Sylvester Stallone‘s upcoming action film Bullet to the Head seems to have impressed the masses after its premiere at the Rome Film Festival where a trio of reviewers agree on its quality.

Jordan Mintzer at The Hollywood Reporter calls the teaming of Stallone and director Walter Hill (48 Hours) “a hard-hitting exercise in beefy, brainless fun… This rock-’em sock-’em, tongue-in-cheek action thriller wears its B-movie credentials loud and proud.”

Jessica Kiang at The Playlist seems to have enjoyed herself even though it seems she really didn’t want to. “There is absolutely nothing defensible about the movie’s leering treatment of women, or the casual racism played frequently for laughs, or even the utter nihilism of its hero,” she writes. “[B]ut it’s so patently unrepentant, and so oddly even-handed in having all of its characters seem mindbendingingly dumb, that it kind of gets a pass.”

And Variety‘s Jay Weissberg opens his review with:

Maybe it only seems like Walter Hill and Sylvester Stallone worked together before “Bullet to the Head.” After all, the director and the iconic action star sound like an ideal pairing, and nothing here will dissuade fans of their suitability as a team. Stallone may tinker with everything on his outside, but (who’d a thought?) it’s the inside that counts, and by now, playing a tough hitman with a strong ironic edge comes as natural to him as gunplay does to a Hill pic. Warner Bros. release should generate a decent chunk of change following an early February opening.

Bullet to the Head arrives on February 1 and is based on the graphic novel written by Matz and illustrated by Colin Wilson. It tells the story of a New Orleans hitman (Stallone) and a New York City cop who form an alliance to bring down the killers of their respective partners.

Along with Stallone, the film co-stars Sung Kang, Christian Slater, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agabaje, Jason Momoa, Sarah Shahi and Holt McCallany, many of which can be seen in a brand new batch of 13 pictures from the film, which I’ve included here along with the trailer at the top of this post.

Enjoy.
