Aaron Sorkin Boils the Life of Steve Jobs Down to Three Moments in Time


We all know about Joshua Michael Stern‘s Jobs, the Steve Jobs biopic that Ashton Kutcher toplined and is currently in post-production, but no one is really taking that one too seriously and it still doesn’t have a domestic distributor.

The take on the life of Jobs that most are curious about is the one Aaron Sorkin (The Social Network) is writing for Columbia Pictures and today he revealed some details concerning his draft that are sure to grab your attention.

The project was originally expected to be based on the biography “Steve Jobs,” by Walter Isaacson, but it sounds like Sorkin has used that knowledge and turned it into something a little different. Speaking with the Daily Beast (video right) he revealed:

“I hope I don’t get killed by the studio for giving too much away, but this entire movie is going to be three scenes, and three scenes only. That all take place in real time. Real time is when a half hour for you in the audience is the same as a half hour for the character on the screen, there will be no time cuts and each will take place before a product launch. Backstage before a product launch. The first one being the Mac, the second one being NeXT after he had left Apple and the third one being the iPod.”

Some are taking this to interpret as there will be only three, 30 minute scenes, but I imagine the structure won’t be that rigid, but wow does it sound fascinating… to me at least.

As for how the idea came about Sorkin adds, “I don’t know if you remember the ad campaign he did… It was the ‘Think Different’ campaign. ‘Here’s to the crazy ones.’ That’s how it began. If I can end the movie with that text and that voice over… If I can earn that ending, then I will have written the movie that I wanted to write.”
