Can ‘Beasts of the Southern Wild’ Nab a Cinematography Nomination?

As I said yesterday when I posted the featurettes on the Life of Pi tonight, and Claudio Miranda (The Curious Case of Benjamin Button) looks like a major contender.

That said, Gold Derby‘s Tom O’Neil just posted this following interview with Ben Richardson for his work in Beasts of the Southern Wild, a gritty, down-in-the-dirt and magical drama that very easily could find itself with a nomination in Cinematography along with several other categories.

Richardson discusses his work in the film and the first time he met the film’s young star, Quvenzhané Wallis and how he developed his shooting style on the picture around her and her comfortable nature around the camera.

The conversation regarding Wallis, as a matter of fact, made me think of how Fox Searchlight will probably be sure to get her out and about campaigning. Personally it sounds a little iffy trotting around an eight-year-old (soon to be 9) on an Oscar campaign, but from what I’ve seen, and O’Neil describes her the same way, she’s got a personality and that could go a long way with voters. The conversation Richardson and O’Neil have regarding her approach definitely makes her sound more like a comfortable actor rather than a kid that just managed to “get it right” with her performance.
