‘Parnormal Activity 5’ Set for Halloween 2013 with Spin-Off Eyeing Spring 2013

I don’t believe I’ve mentioned the as-yet untitled Latino Paranormal Activity spin-off Paramount is putting together for a Spring 2013 release, but those that stuck around through the credits of Paranormal Activity 4 this weekend got a taste of what it has to offer with a teaser clip. The film, however, has not gone entirely into production, though it will shortly with Christopher Landon directing.

Landon has been involved in the Paranormal Activity franchise since the second one, which he co-wrote with Michael R. Perry and then wrote 3 and 4 on his own.

The spin-off will involve the same demon from the Paranormal films, but will target the Latino audience with one Paramount insider telling Deadline, “This will be an off-shoot aimed at the groups who have been the biggest supporters of the property – Latinos and folks in Latin America – Mexico, Brazil, and Argentina.” The film will largely be shot in English, though some portions will be in Spanish using mostly Latino actors.

Along with that, as if there was ever any doubt, Paramount will bring Paranormal Activity 5 to theaters Halloween 2013. No director or writer have yet been announced, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Landon plays a role in that as well. Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman directed the last two, with Paranormal Activity 4 bringing in $56.5 million worldwide this weekend on a budget of only $5 million.

The one common factor between them all is producer Jason Blum, whose Blumhouse Productions not only produced the first Paranormal Activity feature, but also all the subsequent sequels along with Sinister. You’ll also find Blum’s name attached to other low budget horrors including Insidious and Barry Levinson’s upcoming found-footage viral thriller The Bay. One thing is for certain, the guy knows how to put together low budget horror that rakes in the dollars.
