‘Moonrise Kingdom,’ ‘Avatar 3-D’, ‘Madagascar 3’ and More On DVD and Blu-ray this Week

This Week On DVD and Blu-ray: October 16, 2012

I have mentioned it a couple times before, but in case you missed it and haven’t looked yet, I spiffed up the DVD and Blu-ray release date calendar, so DVDs and Blu-rays are listed separately along with their Amazon purchasing links. To that end, I don’t believe I have ever mentioned it, but buying product through the Amazon links here on the site helps support the site as Amazon tosses a little money toward RopeofSilicon. It’s not a lot, but every little bit helps, so if you can, consider it next time.

With that, let’s see what’s out this week…

Moonrise Kingdom

Moonrise Kingdom is undoubtedly one of my favorite movies this year and oddly enough I haven’t taken time to watch the Blu-ray yet. “What gives Brad?” “Yeah, what gives?” I don’t know, just haven’t had a chance to watch it, perhaps it’s this inner-dialogue I’ve been dealing with that has now leaked into my writings.

Actually, I know one reason why, and that’s because the features are unimpressive at best, at least in that a lot of what the discs hold has already been online in some form or another in “Welcome to the Island of New Penzance” and the “Set tour with Bill Murray”. Not even the animated shorts are on here. Considering Universal has been teaming with Criterion a lot lately, I have to assume there will be a Criterion edition down the road. All of Anderson’s films, except Fantastic Mr. Fox unfortunately, have made their way to Criterion and this one is a prime candidate given this disappointing release.

That’s My Boy
That's My Boy on DVD Blu-ray today
I thought this movie was funny and think its overall dismissal was caused by what people tend to do when an actor makes a lot of bad movies — they judge the movie more on the trajectory of the actor rather than the movie itself. That’s not to say I’m suggesting you run out and buy this, but a rental would be a good choice. Just do know, it’s really dumb humor, but funny… in my opinion.

Chernobyl Diaries

I looked back at my schedule and it seems there either wasn’t a screening for this one or I was in Cannes when it took place so I didn’t add it to the calendar. My assumption is the latter, but, if my vague memory serves, it was a 9 PM screening the night before, which never bodes well for the quality of a film. Following its release there was hardly a word said about the film, but it did manage to make $35.9 million on a very small budget so this DVD and Blu-ray release should be gravy for WB.

Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted

A 75% RottenTomatoes rating and a whopping $681.5 million worldwide. Did I miss something skipping this movie in Cannes and having absolutely no desire to see it based on how awful the first two films were?

2016 Obama’s America

To my absolute surprise, and tell me if this doesn’t surprise you as well, 2016 Obama’s America was the most popular title on Amazon among the titles being released this week. Avatar is #2, Madagascar 3 #3 and “Mad Men” Season Five #4. I just can’t believe it, but I’m sure there is an easy explanation that I’m too weary to try and answer. I know the screener showed up at my doorstep and my first instinct was to laugh… so I did… then I briefly wondered if I would actually watch it… I didn’t.
