Does ‘Stand Up Guys’ with Pacino, Walken and Arkin Look Like a Golden Globe Contender?

I kept on seeing all these sites posting trailers and posters for a film called Stand Up Guys starring Al Pacino, Christopher Walken and Alan Arkin. I hadn’t heard of the film and had completely overlooked it when it was included in the MPAA Ratings Bulletin back on August 22. Sure, I know who Pacino, Walken and Arkin are, but coming out of nowhere, the film seemed like it was simply looking for attention based on the names, not because it was going to be any good.

Then this morning I get an email telling me Lionsgate is giving Stand Up Guys a December awards-qualifying run, prior to opening nationwide on January 11, 2013. I am assuming Lionsgate is targeting the Golden Globes’ Musical/Comedy categories with this one considering it’s a comedy and the Academy doesn’t really know how to laugh.

The story centers on a pair of aging con men (Pacino and Walken) who re-team with another old pal (Arkin) for one epic last night. The twist to the story is that one of the friends has been put in an impossible quandary by a former mob boss, and his time to find an acceptable alternative is running out.

With all that in mind give the trailer a watch directly below and see what you think. Are we looking at a decent late entry into the Globes race?
