Night Cap: Bane’s Origin, a ‘Kill Bill’ Bloodbath, Lawrence’s $10 Million for ‘Catching Fire’ and More

We’ll begin tonight’s Night Cap with some behind-the-scenes information pertaining to The Dark Knight Rises. To be more specific, the film’s villain Bane as played by Tom Hardy and what we didn’t see in the final film.

Speaking with GQ (via Slashfilm), costume designer Lindy Hemming discusses a scene pertaining to Bane’s origin story that wasn’t in the final film:

The thing that you should have seen during that sequence is [Bane] being injured in his youth. So one of the fundamental things about his costume is that he has this scar from the back injury. Even if he hasn’t got the bulletproof vest on, he still has to wear the waist belt and the braces. In that scene in the prison, where he’s learning to fight the same way Batman learned to fight, he’s wearing an early version of his waist belt. It’s showing support, but it’s not the finished one he eventually wears. He’s also wearing an early version of his gas mask, all glued together … If you look at the film, unless they’ve cut it–and I’m sure they haven’t–there’s a whole early section for Tom Hardy where he’s fighting and being taunted by people. He’s got chains on him, and he’s standing on a wooden thing while people are attacking him. And in that scene, he’s wearing a much more ragged, primitive version of the mask.

When told the scene wasn’t in the final film Hemming added, “I won’t elaborate on it too much, because it isn’t in the film, but there was another section that showed you why he had the mask and where it came from.”

There has been a lot of talk of how the original screenplay for The Dark Knight Rises was 400 pages long, which was eventually cut down to a 165-page shooting script, which was actually online only a few days ago but has since been removed. Considering the film ultimately ran as long as it possibly could and still be spooled for IMAX 70mm screenings I’ve wondered myself if anything was cut that Nolan may have preferred been in the final film, but couldn’t due to limitations spooling the large IMAX format film.

At the same time as this information comes out, artist Sebastian Lochmann uploaded the concept designs for scars on Bane’s back, which were also never featured in the film. You can see one example above and the other directly below.

Speaking of Bane, here is a pretty stupid Bane parody featuring Chris Kattan as The Dark Knight Rises villain following the events of the film.

Moving beyond Batman stories, Michael Kenneth Williams (“Boardwalk Empire”) is in negotiations to join the cast of Robocop, where he’d play the partner to the titular character (Joel Kinnaman). [THR]

Despite reports Jim Carrey was bowing out, Jeff Daniels says the Dumb and Dumber sequel, Dumb and Dumber To, is still on. “Jim wants to do it. I want to do it. The Farrelly [Bros.] want to do it. They want to rewrite the script a little bit and they aren’t trying to jam it in before I have to go back and do ‘Newsroom’ in November… So they’re going, ‘Why don’t we just do it right? Let’s get everybody organized to go next May or June.’ If everything works out on the business side, that’s what we’ll do but I think there’s more hope than ever.” [Crave]

Kevin Costner is lining up a pair of projects. First off he has been offered the co-lead of the Kenneth Branagh-directed Jack Ryan film starring Chris Pine (Star Trek) in the title role and Branagh as the film’s villain. He’s also being courted by Luc Besson‘s Europacorp to star as a dying assassin in Three Days To Kill. The role in the Ryan feature is said to be a close cousin to James Earl Jones‘ role in the previous films with Jones expected to return (which is awesome news) with Costner playing Ryan’s mentor who recruits him and shows him the ropes. Speaking of Costner, he stars in Zack Snyder’s Superman movie Man of Steel, which was produced by Christopher Nolan who just so happened to discuss the film briefly with Digital Spy. Here’s a look.

George Nolfi (The Adjustment Bureau) is attached to rewrite and direct One Minute to Midnight for Fox 2000. Based on Michael Dobbs’ 2008 book, the story is an hour-by-hour account of the Cuban Missile Crisis. Robert S. Edwards wrote the previous draft. [THR]

Justin Lin (Fast Five, Fast and Furious Six) is in discussions to takeover L.A. Riots from Spike Lee, a screen take on the famous uproar after the acquittal of the cops who assaulted Rodney King twenty years ago, which led to the death of 53 people, and $1 billion in property damage. [Vulture]

Word has it Jennifer Lawrence is getting a $10 million raise fro The Hunger Games: Catching Fire while Meta Golding (“Criminal Minds”) and Patrick St. Esprit (“Sons of Anarchy”) have joined the cast as Enobaria and Romulus Thread respectively. The first ten minutes of the upcoming horror film The Awakening will be made available on iTunes on Thursday, August 9th. The film hits limited theaters on August 17.

Christopher McQuarrie just finished directing Jack Reacher starring Tom Cruise for a December 21 release and now Paramount has him set to adapt Tom Clancy’s 1993 novel “Without Remorse,” with an eye toward directing the film. [Deadline]
