Teaser Poster for Paul Thomas Anderson’s ‘The Master’

UPDATE: The new trailer is now online and can be seen right here.

As one of the final steps in the process of redesigning the site, which is now looking at a solid September 1 launch date, I am preparing my Oscar predictions for this year, which I expect to roll out following my time at the Toronto International Film Festival. TIFF ends September 16 and is where I have my fingers crossed The Weinstein Co. will choose to premiere Paul Thomas Anderson‘s The Master, of which we now have the film’s first poster.

The Master is set to hit theaters on October 12 and is certainly a strong awards season contender for a Best Picture nomination based on pedigree alone, but for anyone that has seen the early trailers for the film also knows we’re looking at a film that may possibly possess upwards of three acting nominations, nevermind the equal potential for screenwriting, direction and more.

Starring Philip Seymour Hoffman as a man who creates a belief system following his return home after witnessing the horrors of WWII and tries to rediscover who he is in post-war America. He soon gains a following in America, and a young drifter (Joaquin Phoenix) eventually becomes his right-hand man. Amy Adams, Laura Dern, Lena Endre, Jesse Plemons, David Warshofsky, Rami Malek and Joshua Close co-star.

Check out the first poster for the film directly below… I’m pretty sure you’re going to like it and I think there are few inferences we can make. The obvious is that Phoenix’s character appears to be something of an alcoholic in the film, or it could be referencing the “half empty or half full” turn of phrase. Whatever the angle, I like it.
