Could Disney be Planning an Animated Marvel Movie?

While the above piece of art isn’t from Walt Disney, it was something I posted from digital artist Victor Hugo back in a Google Image search and look at all the fan art) and now a new rumor has popped up bringing the question back to the forefront.

Over at BleedingCool they point us to the reputable Blue Sky Disney blog and first a post from last July referencing a potential new film that would “generate a lot of buzz in certain geek communities” from director Don Hall (Winnie the Pooh):

That project, once announced will generate a lot of buzz in certain geek communities, as it’s going to surprise a lot of people for what it is and what it’s not. But it’s in the very early embryonic stage and it depends on how well the project is received upon the presentation that is being prepared for John [Lasseter] and Ed [Catmull].

Nothing had been heard about the project until last week when the following hit the same website:

The projects competing for 2014/2015 are the uber-secret film from Don Hall, which will be a marvelously unexpected project if it ever gets the green light, and Nathan Greno and Byron Howard’s films which are deep in development.

The focus here is on the part of the quote I placed in bold and the word “marvelously”, a word BleedingCool’s Brendon Connelly says was not used by mistake.

So what could all of this be? Connelly speculates it could be the birth of a whole new character, a Disney-Marvel superhero, which would surprise people for what it is, and the geeks for what it is not. I would also doubt it ends up at Pixar, that is unless it turns out to be a sequel to The Incredibles and what the big surprise actually is is that Mr. Incredible himself is becoming a Marvel superhero. I’m not a comic reader, but it would be interesting to see how the comic community would react to such a project.
