Game of Thrones – The Complete First Season
Game of Thrones - The Complete First Season on DVD Blu-ray today
I just started watching this series a couple of days ago and knocked out four episodes in one quick clip and the show itself is great and I imagine those that haven’t read the books are loving it. However, I wanted to be sure to read the first book before watching this season and having done so I must admit, for as good as they have done in condensing a ton of material it just doesn’t compare. I know it’s cliche and obvious to say “the books are better” but in this case there is a massive difference even though so much of what they have done works so well.

All that said, HBO has put together an impressive package for fans and those looking for more detail about the characters and world “Game of Thrones” explores. This includes in-episode guides that expand to a massive wealth of information on everything the series has to offer. In essence it fills in the details a reader of George R.R. Martin’s novels and appendix would have already gained.

There are also several audio commentaries and the video and audio presentation are flawless. If I had a complaint it would be that 13 episodes are spread out over five discs. HBO certainly knows how to make a package appear larger than it is and somehow charge higher prices based on appearances. They make great stuff, but at some point they really need to throw the consumer a bone.

Harvey / The Deer Hunter / Out of Africa (Blu-ray)
Harvey / The Deer Hunter / Out of Africa on DVD Blu-ray today
Universal is exploiting their catalog for their 100th Anniversary and this week their dropping a whole slew of titles and this is the first time most of them have been available in high-definition including The Deer Hunter and Harvey, the latter of which being the only one of the three I’m featuring that I didn’t receive and just happens to be the #1 title of those three that I would rather own. The Deer Hunter is great, but Harvey is a fantastic feel-good movie I’d love to get a look at in HD.

Several other titles are hitting Blu-ray for Universal’s 100th today as well including The Blues Brothers, Meet the Parents, Despicable Me, Parenthood and The Nutty Professor. You can check out all of them at Amazon by clicking on the Buy Now link below.

Immortals on DVD Blu-ray today
I liked this movie and am anxious to watch it again and plan on doing so in the next couple of days so I will reserve any manner of lengthy commentary other than to say I’m interested in watching the “Caravaggio Meets Fight Club: Tarsem’s Vision” featurette and find out what the alternate opening and ending are all about.

I’m curious what more people will make of this film as the years go by. Recently there has been a lot of talk around these parts about what films will be remembered ten years from now… Will this be one of them?
