2012 Golden Globe Award Nominations

This morning Gerard Butler, Woody Harrelson, Rashida Jones and Sofia Vergara announced the 2012 Golden Globe Award nominations.

The nominations were announced in two waves, the first was at approximately 5:15 AM PST and to my personal surprise Madonna‘s W.E. scored two nominations, one for Abel Korzeniowski‘s score and another for the song “Masterpiece” which plays during the film’s credits. The HFPA was also sure to get Angelina Jolie in the mix early by nominating her feature directorial debut In the Land of Blood and Honey for Best Foreign Language Film. Beyond those mentions, there really wasn’t much to take away from the first wave unless the nomination for Cars 2 in the animated category surprises you.

The second wave of nominations were presented live during “The Today Show” on the East Coast and during local morning news here on the Pacific Coast and this batch showed a clear sign the Hollywood Foreign Press enjoyed George Clooney‘s The Ides of March as it scored a nomination for Best Picture (Drama) along with a nomination for Ryan Gosling for Best Actor (Drama), Clooney for Director and a screenplay nod for Clooney and Grant Heslov.

The Artist and The Descendants continued their run, both earning Best Picture nominations, Best Director, Screenplay, Actor, Supporting Actress and Ludovic Bource was also nominated for Original Score for The Artist.

Otherwise, surprises were kept to a minimum, though it was interesting to see Viggo Mortensen score a Supporting nod for his performance in A Dangerous Method and instead of five nominees in Best Picture (Drama) there were six with The Ides of March being the surprise entry there while Warner’s Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close was once again blanked.

I have included all of the nominees directly below and will be back later today with a closer evaluation of the noms and possibly some updated Oscar predictions. You can check out all my current predictions here.

The 2012 Golden Globe Awards will be broadcast live at 5:00-8:00 p.m. (PST)/8:00-11:00 p.m. EST on January 15, 2012. The festivities will be hosted by Ricky Gervais and just like last year I will be here with a live blog and winners as always. If you’ve never tuned in for that, just click here to check out last year’s coverage when Gervais stole the show.
