Ben Whishaw To Play Q in New James Bond Film, ‘Skyfall’

It would appear Daniel Craig‘s third stint as James Bond in what has been officially titled Skyfall will bring more than one familiar franchise character back into the fold. Naomie Harris is already confirmed to play Miss Moneypenny, a character that is first known as a field agent named Eve, and now previously reported cast member Ben Whishaw has been confirmed as gadget maestro Q.

Outside of a brief appearance in 1962’s Dr. No under his real name Major Boothroyd, Q was first featured in the Bond franchise by Desmond Llewelyn in 1963’s From Russia with Love all the way through The World Is Not Enough. After Llewelyn passed away in 1999, the character was portrayed by John Cleese in Die Another Day.

Q is the head of Branch Q, the fictional armory division of MI6 and was not seen in Casino Royale or Quantum of Solace, both of which were early missions in what amounts to a reboot of the franchise. Whishaw is 12 years younger than Daniel Craig, which will mark the first time the Q character is younger than Bond.

Now, of course, we have to wonder if rumors of the iconic Bond villain, Ernst Stavro Blofeld, are true. Like Q, Blofeld’s first appearance in the franchise was in From Russia with Love. I’ve discussed the Blofeld rumors several times so if you need catching up just click here.

As for the Skyfall, it is set to hit theaters in the UK and Ireland on October 26, 2012 and in North America on November 9, 2012. The synopsis goes like this:

Bond’s loyalty to M (Judi Dench) is tested as her past comes back to haunt her. As MI6 comes under attack, 007 must track down and destroy the threat, no matter how personal the cost.
