Has Roberto Orci Hinted at the Return of Khan in J.J. Abrams’ ‘Star Trek 2’

J.J. Abrams‘ last film, Super 8 was secretly about an alien on a train and now he’s working on another one according to Deadline, this time a mystery adventure with State of Play co-writer Billy Ray. Ray and Abrams will co-write the script which Paramount has already picked up while in the meantime Abrams is preparing for Star Trek 2, which had a bit of news surface recently as well.

In an interview on the official Star Trek website, screenwriter Roberto Orci said, “The cast is excited. We have a director. We’ve started scouting locations. The second time around the crew is already together from the start, so we can jump right into the adventure.” He also said a series of comics will be released prior to the film that will foreshadow events in the movie:

As we get closer to the next movie, the stories will begin to foreshadow the events of the movie, such as possibly introducing new characters we will see onscreen… pun very much intended.

Personally I don’t get what the “pun” is, but one commenter at TrekMovie (which is where I learned of the above quote) seems to believe it hints at the return of Khan (the villain played by Ricardo Montalban in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan) saying “As in Kirk and Khan were never face to face in person” in that movie. If that’s the case, wow, good sleuthing.

Either way, things are clearly moving forward on the feature, which was originally planned for a June 29, 2012 release but will now likely hit late 2012 or summer 2013.
