Smith, Elba, Foxx or Tucker – Who Do You Want to Lead Tarantino’s ‘Django Unchained’?

If this was 2005 I probably wouldn’t be cringing as much as I am at the idea of Jamie Foxx leading Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained, but as much as I trust Tarantino’s judgment when it comes to casting this would be a decision I couldn’t support until seeing actual footage.

The rumor comes from Roger Friedman at Showbiz 411 who seems to have heard “talk” that Foxx has risen in favor above the likes of Will Smith, Idris Elba and Chris Tucker for the title role in Tarantino’s upcoming spaghetti western.

Jamie Foxx was mentioned as being on the shortlist a week ago, and, if this tells us anything, it’s become quite apparent Will Smith is not going to be taking the role of Django, the freed slave who seeks to reunite with his slave wife, a journey which will see him team up with Dr. King Schultz (Christoph Waltz), a German bounty hunter, to take down Calvin Candie (Leonardo DiCaprio), an evil plantation owner.

I’ve only read about 16-20 pages of the script so I don’t necessarily have a complete grasp on the character, but I wouldn’t mind seeing Smith or Elba, just based on talent alone. Tucker would then probably be my #3 and Foxx would be the last choice. However, I haven’t seen any audition tapes, read the whole script or heard how Tarantino wants the character portrayed. So what do I know?

That said, we’re offering up our opinion for favorites here, so why don’t you do the same? Who would you most like to see in the title role in Tarantino’s next film? Vote in the poll below.
