Javier Bardem Offered Major Role in ‘James Bond 23’

He not only has been offered the lead role in Ron Howard’s adaptation of Stephen King’s The Dark Tower, but now Javier Bardem has reportedly been offered a major role opposite Daniel Craig in Sam Mendes’s Bond 23.

Deadline has the report and says there are no details as to what role Bardem’s been offered, but I think we’re all coming to the same conclusion that it’s likely the lead villain, and there’s no doubt his Oscar-winning turn as Anton Chigurgh in No Country for Old Men played some part in deciding on him for the part. Of course, an offer doesn’t mean it’s a done deal just as Bardem’s participation in The Dark Tower isn’t a deal either.

While Bond 23 is already set for a November 9, 2012 release the film still doesn’t have a theatrical distributor, but Deadline offers up some new details as far as that goes saying MGM is negotiating to make an overall deal for worldwide theatrical and home entertainment distribution of not just Bond but also MGM’s new product as well as its library of films. The decision would give the studio instant cash flow following its recent bankruptcy declaration. In recent news reports it sounded like either Paramount or Fox were the top contenders for the film, the former sounding like the current front-runner.

In other recent Bond news, I wrote on Thursday that Judi Dench was confirmed to be returning to the role of M for the seventh time.

The story for Bond 23 is unclear as the screenplay by Neal Purvis, Robert Wade and John Logan has been kept under wraps. All that’s known is the story will begin after Quantum of Solace left off, but there’s no telling just how much of Quantum‘s signature will be used. I would expect some kind of continuation of the “Quantum” organization storyline to remain.
