‘King’s Speech’ Leads the Full List of 2011 Golden Globe Nominees with Seven

This morning the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) had me up and out of bed at 5 AM for the announcement of the nominees for the 68th Annual Golden Globe Awards, which will be held just over a month from now on Sunday, January 16, 2011. Josh Duhamel, Katie Holmes and Blair Underwood joined Hollywood Foreign Press Association Philip Berk to announce the nominations in 25 categories in film and television.

Leading the list of film nominees is The King’s Speech with seven in total followed by both The Fighter and The Social Network with six. After that, Inception, The Kids are All Right and Black Swan all have four.

As far as surprises go, I’d say the Comedy/Musical categories look like a disaster as The Tourist isn’t only nominated for Best Picture (Comedy/Musical), but both Jolie and Depp were nominated for Best Actor and Actress for their roles in the travesty of a film… an acting travesty for certain. Depp was also nominated for his role in Alice in Wonderland and the film itself also enjoyed a Best Picture (Comedy/Musical) nom and Best Score for Danny Elfman.

Perhaps 127 Hours missing out on a Best Picture (Drama) nom is a surprise as director Danny Boyle also didn’t receive a Best Director nomination, overlooked for David O. Russell (The Fighter) instead. Though Boyle and co-writer Simon Beaufoy did find their screenplay nominated.

Beyond that, I’d say the Globes are rather safe from too much ridicule since they do break things up into two different categories so there’s little room left for a snub. However, I was interested to see Alexandre Desplat nominated for his King’s Speech score instead of The Ghost Writer. I was beginning to think Roman Polanski’s feature may be able to start breaking through after some recent love, but perhaps that was me jumping the gun.

Always remember I am keeping track of everything award related under the sun in “The Contenders“! Enjoy the noms…
